[pronounced mAH-rih-oh eet-SEL suu-Aar-ehs]

I am a female-to-male transgender man from the Texas-México border town of Eagle Pass, Texas.  I graduated from Eagle Pass High School-C.C. Winn Campus in 2002 and pursued a Bachelor of Arts degree in Ethnic Studies at The University of Texas at Austin in 2006.  In 2007, I received my license as a Texas secondary mathematics teacher (grades 8-12).  After several years of teaching, I received my Master of Arts degree in Mathematics Education in 2012.  My master's report was titled "Interventions for English Language Learners in the Mathematics Classroom", completed through the UTeach program at The University of Texas at Austin.  I am also certified as a Texas Master Mathematics Grades 8-12 Teacher and am AP certified.

I completed my Ph. D. in Curriculum and Instruction from Texas A&M University this last December 2018.  My dissertation research consisted of three quantitative studies that examined the relationship between being children of same-sex parents and their developmental, early literacy,  and early numeracy outcomes.
